I don't know why but why did british cartoons have a bleakness to them like Banana man Duckula Padington Bear compared to the american and jap ones?

With due deference to the Goons, without whom the absurd could not have been the best representation of reality, Danger Mouse ranks with Monty Python in that genre ... does a far better job at poking fun than James Bond.I doubt that most people see what a spoof Bond is, but it is all out in the open with DM and, as with Lewis Carrol's "Alice", operates at every level from child to adult.

They're all on DVD now, all seasons :) I have the first one. I just haven't gotten around to buying the others yet, but I am.

TLC2287,Danger Mouse was actually an 80s program, very early 80s. You might have seen it in syndication. But another possibility is that you might be thinking of "Count Ducula," made by the same company that sometimes crossed characters. That was an early 90s program.
